One of the
most important cities of peninsular India, Nagpur is situated
on the banks of the River Nag in Maharashtra. Termed as the
winter capital of Maharashtra, it is among the greenest cities

History

Part of one of the oldest inhabited
regions of India, dating back to the Vedic Age, Nagpur has
a rich history, having been ruled, by almost, every important
dynasty of the subcontinent. It has also been the seat of
power of the Devagad dynasty, the capital of Central Provinces
of British India and for a while the capital of Central
Province (Madhya Pradesh) of independent India before it
was merged with Maharashtra.

The climate
of Nagpur is tropical. While summers are very harsh, the monsoon
season is very humid and pleasant during winters, when the
average maximum temperature is about 25-27 deg C. Light woolens
are sufficient to keep out the chill. Strategically located
in the Deccan Plateau, this magnificent city is at 305 meters
above seal level and shares its boundaries with Bhandardara
on the east, Amaravati and Wardha to the west and Chandrapur
to the south. To the north, this district shares boundaries
with the state of Madhya Pradesh. |

Nagpur is
well connected by road, rail and air. The airport is around
10 km from the main city and is well connected with important
cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Raipur, Bhuvaneshwar, Calcutta
and Hyderabad. By rail, the Nagpur railway station is located
at the heart of the city. There are regular rail connections
with Mumbai, Bangalore, Calcutta, Delhi and Hyderabad. Nagpur
is also well connected by road and the bus stand is located
near the Raj Bhavan. It operates a good service for nearby
places like Sevagram, Ramtek, Jalgaon and even for Hyderabad
and Madhya Pradesh. |

MAHARAJBAGH
ZOO - The Maharajbagh Zoo is an interesting
place to visit, located near the banks of the Nag River which
flows through the city. Even though the zoo houses a limited
number of species, it is nevertheless a nice place to see,
especially if you are with kids. |

RAMTEK
- The name Ramtek literally means " The
Hill of Ram". Its main attraction is the fort, built
on top of this hill. Raghuji Bhosle, the first Bhosle ruler
of Nagpur, is said to have built this fort in 1740. |

SEVAGRAM
- Sevagram (the village of service) is located
some 8 km from the city. Everyday, at 4.30 am and again at
6.00 pm, multi-religious prayers are conducted here, in which
you are welcome to participate. |

SITABULDI
FORT - It is located in the centre of Nagpur,
built atop a hill having steep slopes, and is protected by
a moat. There is a War Memorial within the fort, built in
the memory of soldiers, who died in the battle between the
Marathas and the British. |
