A picturesque hill station famous for its scenic splendour and its spectacular 300 Km-wide view of the Himalayas.Kausani also offers other scenic and beautiful spots for sightseeing. Snuggled amongst thick, dense pine forests, atop a narrow ridge, the view of the snow covered Trishul and Nanda Devi is so vivid, that one gets a feeling of the snow being within touching distance. Eulogized by poets and philosophers, this scenic and beautiful spot, offers the ethereal sunrise, that has attracted thousands of visitors to this place time and again. In 1929, Mahatma Gandhi stayed here at the Anashakti Ashram, and was greatly impressed by its environs. For Kausani has on offer, something or the other for every visitor from sightseeing, history, sport and pilgrimage to complete relaxation all year round.
 
     
 
History -
 
 
Originally this place was called Valna. Later, it was called Kasauni. According to historians, the place where Kasauni is situated, there was a flourishing kingdom called Kartikyapur. The remains and ruins of this kingdom, can still be seen here. As such, there isn't much of history connected with this hill town. In 1929,Gandhiji, spend 12 days here and he wrote his book Anashakti Yoga. Kausani is also the birthplace of poet Sumitra Nandan Pant.
 
     
 
Culture Climate & Geographical Location -
 
 
Summers are cool and pleasant and the winters are cold and chilly. Kausani is situated at a distance of 53 Km to the north of Almora, at a height of 6075 ft, atop a narrow ridge.
 
     
 
How to Reach -
 
 
Kausani is well connected by rail, road and air. By air, the nearest airport is Pantnagar at 180 Km and is well connected to different parts of the country. By air, the nearest railhead is Kathgodam at 142 Km and has regular trains to Delhi, Kolkata, Agra, Lucknow and Bareilly. By road, Kausani is linked to several other hill stations road routes. Some of the major road distances are: Almora-54 Km. Ranikhet-62 Km, Pithoragarh-107 Km, Gwaldam-39 Km, Nainital-117 Km. The hill station is also well connected by road to all nearby towns.

Some spectacular views of the hills exist and several snow-capped peaks spanning a 300-Km range can be seen from vantage points around. One of the best spots from which one can photograph the Nanda Devi Range is the State Bungalow at Kausani. A particularly good time is prior to sunrise when one can watch the sun slowly lighting up the tips of the Nanda Devi Range.
 
     
 
Baijnath -
 
 
Situated on the banks of the Gomti River and just below the Kausani Ridge is Baijnath, an important pilgrimage and historic centre. A group of ancient temples dating back to the 12th and 13th century, line the bank of the river, presenting a beautiful sight. Their intricate carvings and stonework are simply awe-inspiring.
 
     
  Pinakeshwar -  
 
This beautiful place in the mountains is 20 Km from Kasauni at an altitude of 9,500 ft. There is a Shiva temple and beyond the temple are spread deep beautiful valleys. This place is also good for trekking and one can see beautiful places in the surrounding of Pinakeshwar.
 
     
  Almora -  
 
Known as the town of temples, Almora is surrounded by modern and ancient Hindu temples and, off in the distance, by the magnificent natural shrines of the cloud-piercing Himalayan peaks. Offering a healthy selection of treks, which combine the pleasures of sightseeing with the spirit of adventure, Almora is known for its healthy climate. Almora is the culture center of Kumaon and a picturesque mountain resort. While still an important agricultural market for the area, Almora remains the most mystical of Kumaons hill stations, bordered by the gentle hills of Kumaon on three sides and affords a breathtaking view of the Trishul peaks on its northern front. Sunrise offers a particularly beautiful view of the Greater Himalayas.
 
 
 
 
Ranikhet -
 
 
An important point on the Kumaon circuit and unrivalled for the panoramic views of the Himalayas, Ranikhet, as hill station, is idyllic in its charm. Weaving an instant spell on the visitor, tourists, over the centuries have, enthused ecstatically over its valley, meadows, cliffs, hills, snow-capped mountains, serpentine rivers and crystal clear rivulets here and there displaying the rainbow. An unusual name, a quaint legend and the sheer beauty of its environs make this Kumaon hill station a wonderful holiday resort. The flowering plants amaze and confuse, when, different branches of the same plant yield flowers of different colours and varying fragrance. Against the backdrop of snow-capped Himalayan peaks, it has the added attraction of ancient temples, pretty picnic spots, quiet strolls and exciting treks. There is also a nine-hole golf course at Upat, on the outskirts of Ranikhet.

ANASHAKTI ASHRAM - It is located at a quiet place where the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi spent some days. Set against the breathtaking beauty of the Himalayas, this Ashram offers a good resting place for travellers. It also has a magnificent library.
 
 
 
 
BAGESHWAR - This important Shaivite centre stands at the confluence of rivers Gomti and Saryu. The famous Baghnath temple built by King Lakshmi Chand in 1602 AD, adorns the city. There are two ponds, Suryakund and Agnikund, which are very famous.
 
 
 
 
GWALDAM - At an altitude of 1829 m, this typical small Himalayan town surrounded by fruit orchards is an ideal base for trekking to Roopkund and Pindari glaciers in Kumaon Himalayas.
 
 
 
 
KAFNI SUNDERDUNGA GLACIERS - These two glaciers give ample opportunities for people who love adventure. The Kafni and Sunderdunga glaciers promise great adventure and thrills.
 
 
 
 
LAKSHMI ASHRAM - This ashram is a leading social service organisation, which runs many developmental, and welfare programmes for women. Sarla Ben, one of the disciples of Gandhiji, stayed here all along her life.
 
 
 
 
PANT MUSEUM - This beautiful museum is dedicated to national poet Sumitra Nandan Pant. Born in Kasauni, the building in which the museum is located was the place where he spend his childhood.
 
 
 
 
SOMESHWAR - Someshwar is a very famous Shiva temple situated 19 Km from Kausani. Located in a very beautiful valley, it is believed that the Kumaon ruler Somchand built the temple. The Someshwar temple is built in Katyuri style of architecture.
