Jamnagar,
now an expanding town, was a 16th century pearl fishing center
with one of the biggest pearl fisheries in the world, until
the beginning of the 20th century. Founded in 1540, the Abode
of the Jam - the Jadeja Rajput rulers of Nawanagar, Jamnagar
is a very interesting city which enjoys a variety of distinctions.
It is renowned for its pearl fisheries, a naval base of some
importance, and a certain type of tie-and-dye fabrics. The
famous cricketer Ranjitsinghji was its ruler from 1907-33. |

Founded
in 1540, Jamnagar or the Abode of the Jam is built around
Ranmal lake. Prior to independence, the princely state of
Jamnagar was ruled by the Jadeja Rajputs. A city that has
a long history of pearl fishing and bandhani (a tie-and-dye
piece of cloth), today it is equally known for having the
only Ayurvedic university in India and a temple listed in
the Guinness Book of records. The old part of the town, known
as Chandni Chowk, has a number of interesting and impressive
old buildings, and is very colourful. The centre of the old
town is known as Darbar Gadh, a semicircular gathering place
where the former Maharaja of ,once held public audiences. |

is well connected by rail, road and air. By air, various domestic
airlines connect it to Mumbai (Bombay). By rail, Jamnagar
is on the Western Railway and is directly connected with Ahmedabad
which in turn is well connected to different parts of the
country. By road, State transport buses and private luxury
coaches connects Jamnagar to various centres of Gujarat. Jamnagar
is 308 Km. from Ahmedabad via Rajkot and 92 Km. from Rajkot. |

Dwarka
- |

A
pilgrim center, it is also one of India's seven sacred cities.
A visit to this place, gives eternal happiness to the Hindus.
Earlier Dwaravati and now known as Dwarka, it means a small
gateway or doorway. One of the main centres of the Krishna
legend, it sits on the western most tip of the Gujarat peninsula,
a sentinel over looking the Arabian Sea. Dwarka is a scene
of frenzied religious activity on Krishnas birth anniversary
or Janmashtami in August every year. |

Lakhota

The
Lakhota Fort and the Kotha Bastion are two magnificent structures
situated in the centre of old Jamnagar, on an island in the
middle of the lake. Lakhota Fort is Jamnagar's Museum. Its
terraces display a fine collection of sculpture, that spans
a period from the 9th to 18th Century. The Kotha Bastion is
Jamnagar,s arsenal. The most interesting place to see here,
is an old well,
whose water can be drawn by blowing into a small hole in the
floor.

Solarium - |

It is called,
the Ranjit Institute of Poly-Radio Therapy. The slowly revolving
tower, provides sunlight the whole day. It is open to visitors
after working hours. |

Bala Hanuman Temple -
|

The Bala
Hanuman Temple, is on the south eastern side of Ranmal Lake,
and here, 24 hours a day, since 1 August 1964, there,s been
continuous chanting of the invocation Shri Ram, Jai Jai Ram.
This devotion has earned the temple, a palace in the Guinness
Book of Records. Early evening is a particularly good time
to visit, as its fairly animated then. In fact this whole
area on the south eastern edge of the lake becomes very lively
around sunset when people come to promenade, and the usual
chai and kulfi stalls set up and play their trade. |

Marine National Park -
|

| |
30 km away,
offshore from the southern coast of the Gulf of Kachchh, comprises
an archipelago of 42 islands, noted for their coral reefs
and mangroves. It is possible to see dolphins, finless porpoise
and sea turtles and a variety of colourful tropical fish.
The area also attracts a host of water birds. |

KHIJADIA
LAKES - 10 km.
northeast of Jamnagar, are three freshwater lakes surrounded
by salt pans and salt marshes. Popular with visitors interested
in their rich bird life, there is now also a 600 ha (1500
acres) bird sanctuary. |

is a beautiful seaside picnic spot.This place provides good
facilities.
