History
- |
|
| |
Coimbatore
existed even prior to the 2nd century AD, as a small tribal
village capital, called Kongunad, until it was brought under
Chola control in the 2nd or 3rd century AD by Karikalan, the
first of the early Cholas.
Among its other
great rulers were the Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, Pandyas, Hoysalas
and the Vijayanagara kings. When Kongunad fell to the British
along with the rest of the state, it was renamed as Coimbatore
except in Tamil, in which it is called Kovai. |

Food
- 'Hot
and spicy' best describes typical Chettinad cuisine. It is
a mix and match of southern Indian specialties with generous
lashings of fish, chicken and lamb. Traditional breakfasts
include an array of dosas, idlis and upama served with crisp
lentils and chutney. Fish or chicken almost always finds its
way into the menu, authentically prepared with coconut, cumin
and mustard. Wash down the meal with the fiery rasam. Finally,
who can forget the small steel sups of the famous frothy filter
coffee? Anything other than the 'real' stuff is an insult
for a Tamilian! |
